I teach Computer classes in a Middle School and thought about doing something similar in my room using an old CRT monitor. But having loose sand in a classroom (or an office) might not be the best idea. How about… Remove the tube and all guts of the monitor, leaving only the gray plastic outer pieces. Attach a piece of glass or plexiglass to the underside of the ‘frame’ opening and seal in place. To reduce heat and the chance of fire or shock, insert either rope lights of those plug-in air fresheners with the color-changing LED’s. Add sand and then add a glass cover to prevent any sand from spilling. Make a rake with a wooden handle and a steel “tine holder.” Use a magnet on top of the glass to move the rake around. For bonus points, have the monitor buttons control the lights or even a sound maker.
